Flood Early Warning System

A comprehensive approach to monitoring and alerting for flood prevention

System Overview

The Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) is designed to monitor flood-prone areas using a combination of advanced observation systems, real-time data processing, and efficient dissemination channels. This system integrates multiple components, including water level sensors, CCTV cameras, data loggers, and communication tools, to ensure that accurate and timely data is collected and transmitted for flood prediction and response. By placing the system in strategic locations, FEWS enables authorities and communities to be better prepared for flood events.

Site Instrumentation

At the core of FEWS are the instruments installed at the observation sites. These include water level measurement sensors that constantly monitor the river's height, capturing essential data that is logged and transmitted for analysis. The power supply systems, consisting of batteries, regulators, and solar panels, ensure that the system operates continuously, even in remote areas. The communication setup uses GSM-based MQTT to transmit data reliably to the central server. Additionally, each site is equipped with local alert systems, such as sound and light sirens, which provide immediate warnings to nearby residents in case of rising water levels.

Local Dissemination Tools

Local dissemination tools are critical for real-time, on-site alerts. The sound and light sirens installed at each observation site are activated when water levels reach predefined thresholds, alerting the nearby population to potential danger. Furthermore, CCTV cameras provide continuous visual monitoring of the river, offering an additional layer of security. The combination of these tools ensures that those in the vicinity of the observation sites are promptly informed of any imminent flood threats, allowing them to take necessary precautions.

Website Features

The FEWS website is a central hub for accessing real-time data and monitoring flood conditions. The dashboard displays current water levels, CCTV footage, status updates, and the latest data from the observation sites. Users can also access historical data, view past CCTV footage, and manually disseminate alerts through the website. The configuration section allows administrators to adjust system settings and thresholds, ensuring the system remains responsive to changing conditions. This comprehensive web interface is essential for both operational oversight and public awareness.

Non-Local Dissemination

In addition to on-site alerts, FEWS ensures that critical information is disseminated to a broader audience through non-local channels. WhatsApp broadcasts are sent at regular intervals, providing updates on water levels, CCTV images, and timestamps. The frequency of these updates increases as water levels approach dangerous levels, ensuring that stakeholders and the public receive timely information. Moreover, a dedicated LCD display, powered by a mini-computer, shows a simplified dashboard with real-time data and CCTV footage. These non-local dissemination methods play a vital role in keeping everyone informed and prepared during flood events.
